Building Adaptive Resilience for Ethiopian Youth: Project Taking Shape!

On July 30th, 2025, a significant milestone was reached in Ethiopia’s journey toward empowering youth affected by conflict and climate crises. KOICA, represented by Country Director Han Deog Cho, and UNFPA Ethiopia, represented by Country Representative Koffi Kouame, officially signed a Grant Agreement to launch the ambitious project titled “Building Adaptive Resilience for People Affected by Conflict and Climate Crisis Focusing on Youth in Two Regions (Afar region/South Ethiopia) in Ethiopia (2025-2028).”

This agreement, backed by a generous $10.9 million funding over four years, follows the earlier Record of Discussion signed on May 15th between Mr. Cho Han Deog and H.E. Dr. Ergogie Tesfaye Woldemeskel, Minister of Women and Social Affairs. It demonstrates a strong commitment from all parties involved to improve the lives of vulnerable youth in Ethiopia.

The project aims to directly support over 60,000 young people, including refugees, returnees, and internally displaced persons (IDPs), helping them overcome the multifaceted challenges posed by conflict and the escalating impacts of climate change.

Key objectives of the project include:

– Increasing access to quality education

– Strengthening health services

– Providing vital protection and psychosocial support

– Enhancing disaster management preparedness

– Promoting peacebuilding initiatives

– Creating sustainable livelihood opportunities

The expected impact is profound: fostering a stronger, more resilient, and inclusive society where youth can thrive despite adversity.

This initiative symbolizes hope and a collective effort to build a better future for Ethiopia’s youth and communities. Together, KOICA, UNFPA, and partners are paving the way toward sustainable development and peace.

Let’s build lasting hope and resilience — for today and generations to come.
